Synopsis[edit]
Background[edit]
In 2013, a nuclear war forced a large amount of Moscow's surviving population to relocate to the city's Metro system in search of refuge. Eventually, communities settled within the underground train stations and developed into independent states over time. Factions emerged, ranging from the independent peacekeepers the 'Rangers of the Order', to the neo-Stalinist 'Red Line' faction and the neo-Nazi 'Fourth Reich', to the more powerful factions such as 'Polis', which contained the greatest military power and the most knowledge of the past, and the 'Hanza' regime, which controlled the main ring of metro stations by its sheer economic power.
As these groups began to evolve, the Red Line and the Fourth Reich quickly entered a state of war, as both sought to destroy the other. As the war raged, the stations who refused to join either side were either demolished by the factions, merged into the Hanza regime, raided by criminal bandits, or formed their own independent states. Other stations were outright destroyed by animals, mutated by the nuclear fallout. While most of the stations were controlled by the three main factions, some stations formed an independent alliances, including the station VDNKh ('Exhibition'). Within that station, the events of Metro 2033 unfold.
Plot[edit]
The protagonist of the novel is a 24-year-old man named Artyom who was born before the nuclear war. He was saved from a horde of carnivorous rats that killed his mother and the inhabitants of his station as a baby by Sukhoi, a military officer. Sukhoi is now one of the authorities of VDNKh, one of the stations in the Metro, and has raised Artyom as his son. Artyom spends his time on patrol in the tunnels and working in the mushroom factories.
Artyom meets a man named Hunter, who is looking for Sukhoi. The three meet and discuss the situation in VDNKh. VDNKh is facing increasing attacks from mysterious creatures known as 'The Dark Ones', who inspire terror throughout the station. Hunter leaves, but asks to speak to Artyom. Artyom confesses that 10 years earlier, he and his friend went to the surface at the neighbouring station, Botanical Gardens. They were unable to seal the exit after their visit and the Dark Ones have been using this entrance to the metro ever since. Hunter tells Artyom that he intends to gather intel on the Dark Ones, and in the event that he doesn't return Artyom must carry a message to a man named Melnik at Polis with news of the threat. Feeling a sense of responsibility for the Dark Ones' attacks and seeking adventure, Artyom accepts.
Artyom begins to journey towards the centre of the Metro. His first companion, Bourbon, is killed by a psychic force transmitted through the pipes and Artyom is then guided by a mystic named Khan. Khan leads him to Kitai-Gorod which is controlled by criminal gangs, but they become separated during an attack by the Fourth Reich. Artyom flees, only to be captured by the Reich who sentence him to death for killing an officer. Just before his execution, a band of revolutionary fighters intervene and rescue him. Pursued by the Reich, Artyom is left at Paveletskaya station and his route to Polis is blocked by the Hansa controlled Koltsevaya Line, who operate strict border controls. Artyom's passport was lost during his detention, and after a failed attempt to gain travel papers by betting on rat races, Artyom is taken into custody. After escaping, he finally reaches Polis. He delivers his message to Melnik, and the leadership of Polis gather to determine their course of action.
Although Polis do not agree to intervene, a faction known as the Brahmins (who consist of scientists and academics who collect books from the library above), contact Artyom. They offer a solution to the threat of the Dark Ones in exchange for Artyom's help in recovering a sacred book, as they believe him to be psychically sensitive. Artyom travels to the surface with Melnik and young Brahmin called Daniel. They enter the library and are attacked by the 'librarians', mutated creatures that reside there. Daniel is mortally wounded, but before dying, gives Artyom his reward anyway. It is an envelope containing directions to a functioning missile silo. Artyom and Melnik flee without the book and re-enter the metro, arriving at station Kievskaya. Melnik leaves Artyom at the station while he goes to collect reinforcements but whilst he is away, Artyom becomes involved in the search for a missing child. Artyom and the child's father are abducted by a tribe of cannibals who worship 'The Great Worm'. They are rescued by Melnik and a squad of fighters and they escape into Metro-2, a secret set of tunnels that lead to the missile site.
The team pass through the metro station leading to the Kremlin, which contains a mutated bio-weapon that attempts to hypnotize and consume them. Several are killed before they explode a tank of fuel to distract it. The majority of the group go to the surface and the missile silo, while Artyom is accompanied back through the metro so that they can provide targeting co-ordinates from a suitable location, Ostankino Tower. On the way, they stop at VDNKh, which has been almost overrun by Dark Ones. After a brief re-union with Sukhoi, Artyom reaches the tower and his team provide the missile site with the location of the Dark Ones hive. As they do, Artyom has a vision, which relates to the dreams and nightmares that he has been having. The Dark Ones have been trying to make contact, unable to communicate with the human survivors within the metro in a meaningful way, before they found Artyom. Artyom re-evaluates their behavior and realizes that what was seen as aggression were actually attempts to make contact, which were only met with violence. As Artyom realizes that the two races could co-operate, the missiles fall and the Dark Ones are killed. Realising that the Dark Ones were killed in vain, Artyom tears his mask off and heads back home in tears.
Publication[edit]
Dmitry Glukhovsky signing a copy of Metro 2033 at SFeraKon 2012
The book first appeared online in 2002 and later became an interactive experiment, drawing in thousands of readers from around Russia and abroad. In 2005, it was printed by Eksmo and became a nationwide and worldwide bestseller. The English edition was released on 18 March 2010 to coincide with the release of the video game adaptation of the novel.
Reception[edit]
By 2010, over 500,000 copies of Metro 2033 had been sold in Russia alone.[1] Over 2 million had read the book on its official site before it even was published in print.[2] Foreign book rights have been sold to dozens of countries. In 2007, Glukhovsky was awarded the Encouragement Award of the European Science Fiction Society at the Eurocon for Metro 2033.[3]
Adaptations[edit]
Video game[edit]
Promotional models for the video game adaptation with copies of the book at IgroMir 2010
First-person shooter video game Metro 2033, developed by the Ukrainian studio 4A Games, was released worldwide in 2010. Glukhovsky said that he had chosen a video game adaptation over a film as it gave him more artistic freedom to work. Two sequels also developed by 4A Games, Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus, were released in 2013 and 2019.
Film project[edit]
As of November 2010, Glukhovsky has been in talks with Hollywood-based studios and producers to sell the film rights.[1] By 2012, MGM has picked up the screen rights to Metro 2033, setting F. Scott Frazier 'Pavito' to pen the script. Mark Johnson was producing via his Gran Via Productions.[4] However, the production was canceled and the rights were returned to Glukhovsky after he refused to have the film be Americanized and set in Washington instead of Moscow. In December 2018, Glukhovsky explained: 'In Washington DC, Nazis don't work, Communists don't work at all, and the Dark Ones don't work. Washington DC is a black city basically. That's not at all the allusion I want to have [with the Dark Ones], it's a metaphor of general xenophobia but it's not a comment on African Americans at all.'[5]
Sequels and franchise[edit]
Glukhovsky's follow-up novel Metro 2034 was published in 2009, followed by Metro 2035 in 2015. In addition, many other authors have published scores of volumes in the Universe of Metro 2033; anthologies of short stories have been also published and some authors have created their personal underground universes based in other metropolitan areas.[6]

Superb atmospheric FPS!
9/10 Recommended
It's like the developers saw what fell short in Metro 2033 (broken stealth, cumbersome gun play, weird story telling, lack of background music) then fixed it in Metro Last Light Redux. Very polished!
The pacing and the variety of the levels/missions are great. Honorable mention is Depot. Spec Ops Reds are hunting you in several locations and you go full stealth w NVG on them. So satisfying.
There are a lot of extra missions accessed separately from the menu: 9 unique missions played from the perspective of different characters and factions you meet in the main story. I did them after finishing the game. For more immersion, it's best to google where each extra mission fits in the story and play it during your run.
One extra mission that stands out from the rest is the Spider Lair. It was something else.
The game has easy Achievements.
Cons:
-When there are several groups of NPCs, sometimes their conversations overlap and it's not easy to follow what each group says.
-First time I ever have a crash with a Metro game. The game just disappeared from my screen and I was returned to Windows. No error message or anything. Happened only once.
EDIT to add: Yes, the extra missions are accessed from the main menu. Click on Chapters, then look at the lower end and click on Bonus/Extra/New missions. They're all there in Redux.

Alternate endingTo get the 'Redemption' (good) ending, you must perform as many good actions as possible and kill as few humans as possible, like sparing the lives of soldiers who surrender voluntarily and saving women and children. You can also perform good actions by exploring the environment, or eavesdropping on the stories NPCs tell in the cities around the metro. You will know you performed a good action when you see a brief flash of white after someone finishes a story or you save the life of a human. The following is a list of some of the actions that cause the gain and loss of morality points. Note: Completing all actions listed below are not required to get the best ending, but performing as many as possible will improve the chances of getting the best ending. If you do not perform enough good actions, you will get the 'C'est La Vie' (bad) ending.
Gain morality
- Being generous with bullets (give to beggars)
- Doing exactly what NPCs instruct
- Finding hidden ammo caches on 'Quarantine'
- Listening to dialogue in populated areas (exploration)
- Listening to NPC stories
- Playing musical instruments
- Rescuing women and children
- Returning the crying child's teddy bear in 'Venice'
- Seeing all visions in 'Dead City'
- Sparing surrendering soldiers
- Successfully complete 'Bridge' without killing humans
- Successfully complete 'Facility' without killing humans
- Successfully complete 'Revolution' without killing humans
- Successfully complete 'Separation' without killing humans
Lose morality
- Killing humans
- Killing surrendering soldiers
- Stealing in populated areas

Search the indicated locations to find and play all 17 musical instruments and get the 'Musician' achievement. There are only four types of instruments: Accordion, Balalaika, Guitar, and Piano. Note: There is no progress tracker for the instruments -- so make sure you do not forget any of them. Additionally, finding and playing them through chapter select will not work (even if you play the chapter until the end). You must find and play all instruments in the correct order during one playthrough.
Easy 'A Present' achievementShortly after the 'Facility' chapter begins, you will reach an area with some guards. Sneak past them until you come to two guards who are blocking your way. Let them finish talking, which takes approximately a minute. They will then split up, and one of them will go back to where you came from. Follow him to his locker. When he opens the locker, a gun will fall out. Eliminate the guard, and take the gun to get the 'A Present' achievement.
Easy 'Back To The Past' achievementDuring 'The Dead City' chapter, there are a total of seven visions you must see to get the 'Back To The Past' achievement. The visions make the world around you feel more alive for a few seconds. Everything will get brightly colored, and the environment will change to what it once was. Four of the visions are triggered automatically, and there is no way to miss them. So only three of them need to actually be found. The first one can be found after the playground vision, once you come out of the underground area, in a house to your right (before the car accident vision). The second one is a woman in the shower in a house on the left, after the car accident vision. The third one can be found when taking the stairs down the roof, in a small side room. You will get the achievement after seeing the seventh vision inside the old Metro.
Easy 'Bloodlust' achievementDuring 'The Chase' chapter, you must kill all enemies to get the 'Bloodlust' achievement. The only tricky part is at the very beginning of the chapter, before getting on the train. There will be three waves of enemies. In the first two waves, you must kill the eight enemies on the railcars. In the third wave, you must kill the five enemies on the train (one on the back of the train, four standing at the railing). It is recommended to use military rounds instead of the normal ammo, as it does a lot more damage and will make completing this task much easier. Once you are on the train, kill all the remaining enemies to get the 'Bloodlust' achievement once you reach the end of the train.
Easy 'Equipped' achievementThere are a total of 16 equipment stashes scattered across two chapters in the game: Sundown (9 stashes) and Nightfall (7 stashes). After finding all stashes in Sundown, you must complete the chapter. Otherwise, the progress will be lost. Some of the stashes are actual crates, while others have a weapon or ammo on the ground. There are a lot of other crates and ammo locations in the swamps, but only the 16 shown in the video below count towards getting the 'Equipped' achievement.
Easy 'Forest Guardian' achievementAfter the Boss fight with the bear in 'The Garden' chapter, you will see some Watchmen attacking the back of the bear. Kill all three Watchmen to get the 'Forest Guardian' achievement.
Easy 'Forgotten' achievementShortly after the 'Quarantine' chapter begins, you will go past a crowd of people. In the next room are four ammo stashes. Find all four ammo stashes to get the 'Forgotten' achievement. The first one is behind the entry door (go down the stairs so the door closes and you can reach the ammo). The second is down the stairs, and behind a window. The third is on the far left side of the corridor. The fourth is in the same corridor, but on the right side (just a few steps away from the previous ammo stash).
Easy 'Freedom!' achievementAfter going through the prison in the 'Pavel' chapter, you will have to use an elevator. You will then be in an office area with a lot of guards. After eliminating the guards, you will need to open a gate with your comrade. Before opening the gate, check the control panel on the right. There is a red switch. Activate it to free the prisoners and get the 'Freedom!' achievement.
Easy 'Nobody's Home' achievementDuring the 'Khan' chapter, you will reach a flooded underground area (after burning the spider webs and breaking a barrier). Then, a phone will start ringing. Just ignore the phone and keep walking to get the 'Nobody's Home' achievement.
Easy 'Patron Of The Arts' achievementDuring the 'Bolshoi' chapter, you will go through a theater. In the front row, on the right side, is an open seat. Sit down, and wait approximately 10 minutes until the show is over. Do not go anywhere near the exit door. Shortly after the announcer says 'Thank you and please come again', you will get the 'Patron Of The Arts' achievement.
Easy 'Rain Man' achievementDuring the entire 'Bridge' chapter, you cannot kill any enemies to get the 'Rain Man' achievement. The chapter is close to the end of the game. You can basically do two things to avoid killing any enemies: sneak around enemies quietly or run through the level as fast as possible. Running is easier and you will not run out of air (your gas mask consumes air over time, and you will die if it is empty). Just do not attack any of the enemies, and try not to get hit -- and use med packs, if necessary.
Easy 'Reunion' achievementShortly after the 'Venice' chapter begins, you will have to go to a strip club. Instead of going inside the strip club, go left to find a man offering a mini-game for 10 coins. The goal is to simply kill all the mice within the time limit. Win the mini-game three times, and the man will give you a teddy bear. Give the teddy bear to the child with his mother in the same room to get the 'Reunion' achievement.
Easy 'Revenge' achievementDuring the 'Red Square' chapter, you will hunt down Pavel. After wounding him, he will be attacked by demon hands. You can either walk towards him to save his life, or stand back and watch him dying. To get the 'Revenge' achievement, Pavel must die. Thus, stand back and wait until a new cutscene begins.
Easy 'Savior' achievementAt the end of the 'Contagion' chapter, you will go through a burning area and encounter Lesnitsky. He will be holding a hostage. You can either shoot him in the head or wait for instructions. To get the 'Savior' achievement, you cannot shoot him. Just stand still and wait until he tells you to take off your gas mask. Take it off manually, and he will release the hostage.
Easy 'Scram' achievementDuring the 'Regina' chapter, you will drive a railcar. Eventually, you will have to push another railcar out of the way. At that point, the Watchmen (mutated dog-like creatures) will attack you. To get the 'Scram' achievement, you cannot allow any of them to reach your railcar -- so you have to kill them very quickly. It is recommended to use military rounds instead of the normal ammo, as it does a lot more damage and will make completing this task much easier.
Easy 'Van Helsing' achievementAt the beginning of 'The Dead City' chapter, you will see a vision of a playground and some children. Then, you will have to drop down into a small underground area. You can find the Helsing at the very end of this underground area, in a corner. Shortly afterwards, you will encounter a demon (large winged creature) on a rooftop. Weaken the demon with your other weapons, then kill it with the Helsing to get the 'Van Helsing' achievement. Note: If the demon dies too early, you can restart the checkpoint and try again.
